Fort Polk, La (NBC33) — A combat veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan will spend thirty years in prison for murder and attempted murder at Fort Polk.
Marcus Patterson Carey, 28, was kicked out of the Army and staying with another soldier, Byron Whitcomb. Carey killed Whitcomb back in June 2010. Whitcomb had a wife and two year-old daughter.
He nearly killed another soldier, Howard Wayne Alley, but Alley survived.
Defense Attorney Jim Boren said that Carey suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and had synthetic marijuana in his system.
"He's a two-war combat veteran. What he did was unexplainable, except for the fact that he was terribly ill,” stated Boren. “A lot of our soldiers are ill, and I think that our government turns their back on them."
Prosecutors say they did not seek either the death penalty - or even a life sentence - because of Carey's service to his country.
