NBC NATIONAL NEWS — Today we may actually a see a vote where Democrats and Republicans agree! It won't end the shutdown, but it would provide benefits being withheld from military families.
There's mutual outrage from both sides of the aisle over the fact that checks are being withheld from military families.
Over 17 military families aren't getting government payments to bury their loved ones.
"I think it's disgraceful that they're withholding these benefits," said House Speaker John Boehner, Ohio.
"There are no words to express this situation," said Senate Majority Leader, Senator Harry Reid, Nevada.
"I'm ashamed. I'm embarrassed. All of us should be," said Senator John McCain, Arizona.
Lawmakers thought they gave the OK for these payments. Pentagon lawyers disagreed.
Speaker Boehner promises to fix it today.
"Maybe it'll jolt us in to what we know is gonna happen, negotiations and re-opening of the government and lifting the debt limit," said Senator John McCain, Arizona.
House Republicans offered to set up a negotiating team. Senate Democrats will likely reject that until Republicans first pass a budget to get the government running again.
President Obama compared it to buying a house.
"You don't get to say 'Well, let's talk about the price I'm going to pay, and if you don't give me the price then I'm going to burn down your house,'" said the President.
Meantime, the CIA is recalling essential workers, those essential workers being recalled, aren't being paid. They're just being called back in to work.
Around the country, some furloughed employees are volunteering.
"Just trying to get out of the house every day, do what I can, be productive and not wallow," said one furloughed government worker who is volunteering.
Government employees are helping the homeless, cleaning up the environment, while they wait on a paycheck.
