BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Pets in Baton Rouge received a special blessing today to honor the memory of St. Francis of Assisi.
Dozens of people took their furry friends to St. James Episcopal church to get blessed. All creatures were welcome; dogs, cats, even horses.
"I think it's awesome,” Mikky Matthews, pet owner, said. “There are a lot of different pets out, so it's nice. We came to church Sunday and found out about it and thought it was a great idea."
The animal blessing on St. Francis Day is an annual event. St. Francis of Assisi dedicated his life to helping the poor and working for peace.
The current pope is the first pontiff to take his name.
