ASCENSION PARISH, LA — For some people the smallest things mean so much and that’s true for one man in Ascension Parish. His bike is everything to him but when it went out of commission, one random act of kindness made more than just his day.
If you’re from Ascension Parish you have probably seen him riding his bike around town. People call him "Droop " and he even has quite the following on Facebook. When Droop's signature bike broke, someone who he didn't even know swooped in and helped him get off of his feet.
"He has been riding around Louisiana since I was a kid," said Nate Michel.
Michel knows Droop just as the thousands of others do in his area. He is the guy with the gym shorts, backpack and beard who is always on a bike.
"I got some small tours and I got some big our, I go to Laplace and Donaldsonville,” said Paul “Droop” Babin.
Michel always pictured "Droop," aka Paul Babin, riding on his bike but when he was heading home on Tuesday he saw the legendary "Droop" on the side of the road, but something was missing.
"I was walking, then a guy in a black car, he said I am going to give you a bike. He’s going to buy me a bike,” noted Droop. “I was so excited!”
When they got to Wal-Mart, "Droop" hesitated.
“We proceeded to walk in and Droop got nervous and said he wasn't allowed in Wal-Mart for some reason so he asked if he could wait outside for me," said Michel.
Nate told him not to worry, so they walked in side-by-side on a mission.
“He picked the best, prettiest and shiniest bike he could find. He got all excited and pointed to it and said that's the one I want," noted Michel.
So now, Droop is back on two wheels with a huge smile on his face.
“He is easy going guy not a care in the world.”
Next time you see him biking away, yell his name and you will always get a friendly reminder that little acts of kindness do go a long way.
“Yeah, you right,” said Droop.
