ITTA BENA, Miss (SWAC.org) — Southern University added scores in the fourth quarter to pick up a 17-7 Southwestern Athletic Conference win over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium.
SU (2-2, 2-0) finished with 288 total yards padding its 3-0 halftime lead with 14 points in the fourth quarter. MVSU registered 246 total yards scoring a touchdown with 30 seconds left in the game.
A 22-yard field goal by Greg Pittman in the first half was the only score until the final frame.
Dray Joseph passed for 288 yards and a touchdown completing 19-of-29 passes. Lee Doss had a game high 10 catches for 164 yards and a touchdown.
Joseph’s 60-yard touchdown strike to Doss with 8:04 left to play gave the Jaguars a comfortable 17-0 lead.
Lenard Tillery added a five-yard touchdown run that gave the Jaguars a 10-0 lead with 12:51 to play.
Dionte McDuffy led the Jaguars' defense with seven tackles and Omar Cook recorded an interception.
Patrick Ivy found the end zone on a four-yard run with less than a minute remaining for MVSU (0-4, 0-2).
Ivy completed 21-of-38 for 188 yards and an interception. Julian Stafford and Patrick Durr finished with seven receptions apiece. Stafford had 72 yards averaging 10.3 yards per catch.
Durr also led the Delta Devils with 32 yards on the ground on eight carries. Brandon Powe finished with 13 tackles including six tackles for a loss.
The Delta Devils made two trips inside the end zone in the first half but botched two field goal attempts including a wide left by kicker Cherechen Galon's 26-yard field goal attempt.
