HOUMA, LA (NBC33) — A 17-year-old was arrested after she started a fire at her high school. When asked why she did it, she told investigators, “I was just being stupid.”
The Houma Police Department reports that the incident happened on Monday, Sept. 16 at Ellender High School. After discovering that someone set a paper towel dispenser on fire in the girls bathroom, administrators reviewed surveillance footage and identified Crystal Lagarde as the student responsible.
“The fire extinguished itself prior to administration arriving, but it caused minor to moderate damage to the restroom,” a press release noted.
When administrators looked for Lagarde to ask her about the incident, they could not find her. They say she did not report to school the following day. When she returned on Wednesday, she was immediately taken into custody by the school’s resource officer.
Lagarde was arrested and charged with Simple Arson (1 count) and was transported to the Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex.
