BAYOU VISTA, LA (NBC33) — A man was arrested after he allegedly jumped on the hood of his girlfriends car, armed with a knife, and shattered the windshield as she attempted to drive away. The woman’s young child was in the car when it happened.
The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident occurred on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at roughly 1:00 a.m. When deputies arrived on scene they found the suspect, Abel Remigio Ortiz, 35, walking away from a vehicle that had a shattered windshield. His girlfriend and her child were still inside the vehicle.
Deputies learned that the argument started inside a home located on David Road in Bayou Vista. Ortiz was involved in a dispute with the woman. When she attempted to leave the home, Ortiz allegedly tried to prevent her from leaving.
The woman managed to exit the home with her young child. As she attempted to drive away in her vehicle, Ortiz allegedly jumped on the hood of the car. He was holding the knife in his hand.
Fearing for her life, the woman continued to drive with Ortiz hanging on the roof of the vehicle. When she approached Highway 182, he struck the windshield with the butt of the knife, causing it to shatter onto the victims.
The woman sustained a cut to her foot from the glass, and the child was injured.
Ortiz was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse, Aggravated Assault (Child Endangerment Law) and Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property. He was booked into the St. Mary Parish Jail.
