DENHAM SPRINGS, La (NBC33) — People living off Clearwater Drive in Denham Springs are still in shock over a murder that happened in their neighborhood.
"I was kind of worried because that's a lot of cop cars to be in this neighborhood, because it's a really safe neighborhood," Nicole Prager, Denham Springs resident, said.
"I thought a car wreck at first and then after that there has to be something else a drug bust or something," Dave Barron, Denham Springs resident, said. "This morning when I got up they (deputies) were still there. I knew something had to have happened."
The Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office was helping East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office on missing person case. David Nguyen, 18, of Baton Rouge, was reported missing by his mother. He was last seen Saturday morning.
Deputies found Nguyen's body off Clearwater Drive off La. 16.
Deputies found the body after Joel Orozco,18, of Denham Springs, confessed to shooting and killing Nguyen. He lead detectives to the scene of the murder off Clearwater Drive in Denham Springs. Nguyen's body was found at that location.
After deputies found the body they spent hours searching for evidence in a field off Clearwater Drive. They used metal detectors and mowing equipment in their search, and eventually found what they were looking for Monday afternoon.
People living nearby couldn't believe something like this happened in their quiet neighborhood.
"This area Denham Springs Livingston Parish is not normally like that at all," Barron said.
"We have a neighborhood watch and everything, which is so weird something like this would happen in this neighborhood," Prager described.
Now residents say they're going to take extra steps to make sure their families are safe.
"I'm definitely going to be more safe and make sure the door is locked the car is locked," Prager said.
"I think it makes everybody worried a little bit more stand offish. You know who's that what are they doing here and so forth. It makes a difference," Barron said.
Orozco is charged with Second Degree Murder. He's locked up in the Livingston Parish Detention Center on a $150 thousand bond.
Deputies say the investigation is on going.
