BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A 33-year-old woman from Baton Rouge was arrested after her children accused her of beating them with a baseball bat and threatening to cut their throats while they slept.
According to the arrest report, an officer with the Baton Rouge Police Department was conducting a routine check at a local business on Monday, Sept. 9 shortly before 3:00 a.m. When the officer arrived, he was notified by a customer that two children were hiding in the store and making claims of physical abuse.
“Both said that their mother had hit them with a baseball bat,” the report notes. “One of the juveniles had several marks on the neck and a bruise on the hip. The other had a small knot on the forehead.”
The juveniles claim they were involved in an argument with their mother, Sarah Sands. At some point during the altercation, Sands picked up the bat and struck each of them. They claim she later threatened to cut their throats while they slept.
The investigating officer contacted Sands at her home and questioned her about the allegations. Although she did admit to hitting her children with the bat, she said it was an act of self-defense. She additionally admitted to the threat of cutting their throats, but claims it was only a joke.
Sands was arrested and charged with Aggravated Battery, Domestic Abuse Battery, and Aggravated Assault. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. Her bond was set at $17,500.
The Baton Rouge Police Department tells us that that the juveniles were taken into protective custody by the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services.
