BATON ROUGE, LA — Capital Area United Way has officially kicked off their 2013 workforce campaign by announcing a $9,050,000 campaign goal.
“United Way has a long history of bringing people together, which is proven once again today,” Scott Berg, Board Chair of Lee Michael's Fine Jewelry, announced.
The organization’s mission is to mobilize our community, collaborate efforts and advance the common good.
“We must focus on why we are here and the issues that fall within our 10-parish service area...because one in four children live in poverty and 70 percent of 3rd graders scored basic or below on statewide reading assessments. In the Capital Area, 11 percent of the population is diabetic, and 32 percent is obese.”
“These are staggering statistics facing us today. And we must address them with our focus on education, income and health,” said Berg.
Berg stated that contributions to CAUW will continue to ensure that a child has an age appropriate book to read or be read to; and can attend a high quality childcare center so they can start school on the right track; ensure that our programs and services empower people to help themselves and move from dependence to independence; and allow a child to learn healthy eating habits early and take part in sports and exercise; enable a young, single pregnant, mother to receive parental support, before and after birth; and can help someone in the community facing a life-threating disease, receive support and care, regardless of their income.
Ralph Bender with Manship Media serves as this year’s Campaign Chair. Bender announced the campaign goal of $9,050,000, which was approved by the organization’s Board of Directors and Campaign Cabinet.
Last year, Capital Area United Way raised $8.7 million to invest back into our community through 47 agencies that provide 113 essential services and programs to our community.
“We have a renewed commitment to run the best workforce campaign this year and already have several pacesetter companies that have kicked-off their campaigns,” stated Bender.
Last year, more than 600 companies partnered with CAUW to run campaigns.
