BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC33) — Tropical Storm Humberto formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean Monday morning. The National Hurricane Center predicts it could become the first hurricane of the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season on Tuesday.
If Humberto does not form into a hurricane until Wednesday, September 11, 2013, then it will tie the record with Hurricane Gustav in 2002 for the "latest, first hurricane to form in a season."
Hurricane Gustav reached hurricane status on September 11, 2002 and went on to become a Category 2 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with maximum sustained wind of 100 mph.
On average, three hurricanes form before September 11.
Although Humberto is forecast to become a hurricane by midweek, it will stay in the Atlantic Ocean and not threaten any land areas.
