NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — A second suspect has been arrested for the shooting death of a toddler.
The New Orleans Police Department arrested Darnell Ramee, 19, on Thursday, Sept. 5. They believe he and co-suspect Keelen Armstrong, 24, are responsible for the gunfire that killed Londyn Samuels and injured his 18-year-old babysitter.
The shooting happened on Thursday, Aug. 29 at roughly 8:30 p.m. In the days following the shooting, NOPD and Mayor Mitch Landrieu held a press conference urging witnesses to step forward with information .
“We talk a lot about the persistent violence, but when a young child is taken from us…this community has got to stand up with force and power and say this is completely and unacceptable,” Mayor Landrieu said. “The only way we’re going to stop the culture of violence in New Orleans is for the people of New Orleans to participate and say no.”
Prior to the press conference, police had only received one tip from the public regarding the possible identity of the shooters. Investigators identified Armstrong as a suspect hours after he was booked into the Orleans Parish Prison for unrelated charges.
“By coincidence, Homicide Detective Robert Barrere established Armstrong as a suspect in the baby’s killing, just a couple of hours after Armstrong’s arrest,” Remi Braden, New Orleans Police Department, said. “Armstrong was then relocated to Homicide for questioning.”
The following day Ramee was arrested.
“This is phenomenal work done by our Homicide division,” Superintendent Ronal Serpas, NOPD, said. "I can’t praise these detectives enough. Detective Robert Barrere, who was the lead in this case, was tenacious, and I had no doubt that he and our team would wrap up this case. I’m hoping the people of this neighborhood can rest a bit easier tonight.”
Officials say both men have past criminal charges. Ramme has been previously arrested for Illegal Carrying of Weapons and Possession of Stolen Property. Armstrong has been previously arrested for Illegal Carrying of Weapons and Driving on a Suspended Driver’s license. Armstrong had two outstanding municipal attachments from the Gretna Police Department.
Officials do not anticipate any further arrests in this case.
