NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — A 24-year-old man was arrested for the shooting death of a 1-year-old and the child’s 18-year-old babysitter .
The New Orleans Police Department reports that Keelen Armstrong was pulled over for speeding on Wednesday, Sept. 4. When the officer ran Armstrong’s information, he found outstanding warrants for his arrest.
“By coincidence, Homicide Detective Robert Barrere established Armstrong as a suspect in the baby’s killing, just a couple of hours after Armstrong’s arrest,” Remi Braden, New Orleans Police Department, said. “Armstrong was then relocated to Homicide for questioning.”
Armstrong was arrested and charged for the fatal shooting, which happened in the 2800 block of South Saratoga Street last week. He’s also accused of injuring the child’s babysitter.
“I’d like the people of New Orleans to recognize that it took this police department less than 7 days to make an arrest in this case”, said Superintendent Ronal Serpas. “Our Sixth District officers, crime scene technicians, firearms examiners and homicide detectives put hours and hours of hard work into this case. They’re dedicated officers, and they’re also dedicated members of this community. They were determined to identify those responsible for killing this baby.”
Armstrong was arrested and charged for First-Degree Murder, Attempted First-Degree Murder, and Driving Under a Suspended License.
Investigators believe a second suspect is responsible for this shooting. They have not yet established an identity for that suspect.
