NEW ORLEANS, LA (NBC33) — An 11-year-old girl was killed and a second young girl and man are in the hospital following an overnight shooting at a home in New Orleans.
According to Police, the shooting happened shortly after midnight on Monday, Sept. 2 at a home located in the 1300 block of General Ogden Street. We’re told an unknown suspect approached the home and began firing.
Arabian Gayles, 11, was shot in the head and died as a result. A second 11-year-old girl was shot in the arm and a man was shot in the shoulder. Both are expected to survive their injuries.
Officials say another woman and child were inside the home when the shooting happened, but they were uninjured.
This is the second shooting within less than a week where a juvenile has been killed as the result of gunfire. The first incident happened on Thursday, Aug. 29 at roughly 8:30 p.m. A 1-year-old child was killed after he and his babysitter were shot.
“We talk a lot about the persistent violence, but when a young child is taken from us…this community has got to stand up with force and power and say this is completely and unacceptable,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said during a press conference. “The only way we’re going to stop the culture of violence in New Orleans is for the people of New Orleans to participate and say no.”
No suspect or motive has been released at this time. If you know anything about this incident call Crime Stoppers at (504) 822-1111.
