CROWLEY, LA — A convicted sex offender is back behind bars after he allegedly broke into an occupied home. Officials say he completed yard work for the family prior to the incident.
“We were notified this morning [Tuesday, Aug. 27] by a home owner that someone was in the process of breaking into their residence at 2:00 a.m. The resident placed themselves in a safe location and called 911,” Chief KP Gibson, Crowley Police Department, said.
Officers arrived on scene and were able to locate the suspect inside of the residence and arrest him.
“The home owner reacted in a manner which helped avoid conflict with the suspect and prevented a really bad incident from occurring” stated Chief Gibson.
Prior to this incident, Matthews’ and other companions have been soliciting for yard work with the victim and possibly others in the area.
“We want to encourage our citizens to be cautious when hiring unknown persons for yard work or small jobs around the house, especially when they are the persons soliciting the work. This could lead to thefts or greater crimes occurring” stated Chief Gibson.
The suspect was identified as Michael Renee Matthews, 47.
“Matthews has an extended criminal history and is currently a registered sex offender. Matthews has been charged and convicted in the past with Rape, Burglary and Attempted Murder” stated Chief Gibson. “Matthews has been charged with home invasion and our agency has notified Probation and Parole officials of Matthews’ arrest. A hold for violation of Parole is being completed.”
