BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Registration for the Department of Education's Course Choice program is now over.
Close to 4,000 students across the state enrolled in the program for its first year.
Course Choice allows students to take classes that aren't offered at their school either online or through pre-approved programs.
Senior Katy Lindsey is taking college classes through the program, something her mom says allows her to tailor her education to fit her needs.
"If we did not have this program, she would have been basically wasting this year taking high school courses she didn't need,” stated Menessa Lindsey. “This allowed her to continue her college education, which of course allows us to save a lot of money."
The classes are free for students in failing schools and available for a small price for other students.
