EAST FELICIANA PARISH, LA — Authorities are investigating a shooting involving an eight-year-old .
On August 22 at around 5:07 p.m., the East Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported gunshot victim at 1094 Hwy 67/Slaughter La.
The victim Marie Smothers, 90, was found to have a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Feliciana Parish Coroners Office.
Smothers was the current garegiver of the eight-year-old.
Although the juvenile initially told investigators that he accidentally shot the victim while playing with a firearm, the investigation has led investigators to believe that the 8-year-old intentionally shot Mrs. Smothers in the back of the head as she sat in her living room watching television.
By accounts of relatives of the victim, as well as friends of the family, the victim and the juvenile had a normal, loving, relationship and even shared the same bedroom.
Although a motive for the shooting is unknown at this time investigators have learned that the juvenile suspect was playing Grand Theft Auto IV.
An autopsy will be performed tomorrow.
The juvenile has been released to his parents at this time. An investigation is ongoing and additional details will follow. The name of the Juvenile is being withheld because of his age and the identity of the victim is being withheld to also protect the identity of the juvenile.
