BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Bears are making headlines across the country - there have been seven attacks on people by bears in five states in the past week alone.
Here at home, state wildlife and fishery officials told NBC33 that there has never been a Black Bear attack on a human in Louisiana.
Officials said Black Bears in our state are used to being around humans. In some areas of the state they're known to rummage through residents' garbage on a regular basis on the hunt for food.
Officials said that if you do see a bear, don't panic, but do try to make yourself look as big as you can.
"You would want to raise your arms above your head and let the bear know you are there,” stated Maria Davidson with the LDWF. “You don't necessarily need to start screaming and escalate an otherwise calm situation, but let bear know you are there. More than likely, the bear is going to turn and run the other direction.”
Officials say you can also carry bear spray to protect yourself.
The Louisiana Black Bear is on the endangered species list.
