GONZALES, LA (THECREOLE) — The Gonzales Police Department has released the name of the armed robbery suspect who was shot after a chase through city and parish roads on Sunday night, August 18. Daniel West, 33, of Gonzales, is currently in critical condition at Our Lady of the Lake hospital but is expected to recovery.
Detective Sargeant Steven Nethken reports that West had a criminal history dating back to 1998 including numerous arrests for simple burglary, contributing to the delinquency of juveniles, theft, felony theft and distribution of schedule II CDS.
West has been charged with armed robbery, vehicle theft and aggravated flight from an officer, but other charges may come to light, stated Nethken.
“Because of the method of operation, Mr. West’s physical description and the type of weapon used during the Domino’s robbery, along with his familiarization of the area, Mr. West is a very strong suspect at this point for the August 14 robbery of New Orleans Daiquiri’s,” said Detective Sergeant Steven Nethken. “That investigation is running concurrently with the Domino’s Pizza armed robbery investigation.”
At approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday night, August 18, Gonzales Police Officers responded to an armed robbery at the Domino’s Pizza on Airline Hwy. within the city limits of Gonzales. An undisclosed amount of money was taken.
The suspect left the establishment in a vehicle stolen from an employee, and officers pursued the vehicle, through a number of city and parish roads.
Gonzales Police Officers and Ascension Parish Sheriff Deputies laid out spikes in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The vehicle then stopped on Roddy Rd., near Fox Run Apartments.
The suspect fled the vehicle with a weapon thought to be a handgun, which was brandished towards officers. Due to the threat, officers fired their weapons, and the suspect was severely wounded, including a gunshot wound to the neck, near the rear of Oak Lane Apartments. He is currently at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.
During the pursuit, a Gonzales Police vehicle went off of the road at the corner of Roddy and Bayou Narcisse, causing the airbag to deploy. The officer suffered minor injuries.
