GONZALES, LA (THECREOLE) — Moments after 8:00 p.m., on Sunday, Aug. 18, an armed robbery was committed in the parking lot of Domino’s Pizza at 1829 N. Airline Hwy. in Gonzales.
A Domino’s delivery driver exited the establishment and walked to his vehicle which was located at the rear of the parking lot within feet of a dumpster. As the driver neared his vehicle, the assailant appeared from behind the dumpster brandishing a firearm and threatening the driver according to witnesses.
The perpetrator was a white male, age indeterminate, who wore “a purple LSU shirt” and whose face was covered by “a white mask.” An unknown amount of money was taken and the perpetrator fled in a white 2013 Ford Focus which belonged to the delivery driver. The Domino’s lighted sign was attached to the vehicle as it exited the rear of the Domino’s parking lot, turning left on Magnolia St.
The victim suffered no injuries.
Domino’s is situated adjacent to the southbound lane of travel and the parking lot occupies the right side of the establishment where approximately ten spaces are located. The dumpster mentioned above rests next to the parking spot furthest from Airline Hwy. and adjacent to the rear exit from which Magnolia St. is accessed. Should one turn right out of the Domino’s rear exit, Magnolia St. runs into an apartment complex.
The perpetrator/suspect travelled approximately 60’ then turned left on Pine St. which is a block from Airline Hwy. He then turned right, or southbound, onto Airline and travelled a short distance before exiting Airline. A high speed chase ensued which occurred on a number of Gonzales city streets as well as parish roads. By the time the suspect turned onto Churchpoint Rd. police had been in hot pursuit.
Another Domino’s delivery driver had witnessed parts of the armed robbery and followed the perpetrator until he could alert police as to the location of the stolen vehicle and the direction it was heading.
The suspect turned southbound on Roddy Rd. at which point the vehicle was disabled and exited the roadway about midway between Churchpoint and Bayou Narcisse Rds. The suspect then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. Officers of Gonzales PD and Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office participated in the pursuit which ensued. The suspect ran through Oak Lane Apartment grounds heading for the wooded area behind the apartments.
As he got to the rear corner of the last apartment building he turned around to face the officers, still possessing the firearm. It is unknown if the suspect discharged the weapon, but officers neutralized the threat. The suspect was later transported to Our Lady of the Lake Hospital. The extent of his injuries are unknown.
One Gonzales PD unit ran off of Churchpoint into the adjacent ditch causing the airbag to deploy. No serious injury was reported.
According to Gonzales PD the investigation is ongoing on no further comment was made.
Domino’s Safety and Security personnel also had no comment as of this reporting.
