LAFAYETTE, LA (NBC33) — A thief took a little more than what they bargained for after burglarizing a home in Lafayette Parish.
“It’s a robotic prosthetic arm, and that’s a very expensive device,” Cpt. Kip Judice, Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. “We don’t think the person intended to steal it, so we’re hoping someone returns it.”
The burglary happened sometime between 11:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11 at a home located on Exploration road. The homeowner discovered the theft had occurred and realized the crook was not phased by her “living security system.”
“The suspect took left over chicken from the refrigerator and fed it to their Great Dane to keep him busy while they took the bag,” the responding deputy reported in the synopsis.
The bag in question belonged to the man of the home. It contained that expensive prosthetic arm, but also had something else on top that probably caught the eye of the crook.
“Apparently the robotic arm is kept in this black case and in it he had his prescription medication on top,” Cpt. Judice explained. “The drugs were visible, but to know the arm was inside, you would have had to pull the case out, open it and look inside.”
So without knowing, the thief probably grabbed what was believed to be a bag of drugs and took off.
Officials say other items were removed from the home. Unfortunately, the homeowners did not contact law enforcement until the following morning, so investigators have little to work with.
“Our investigators are working on what they can, but they don’t have many leads at this point,” Cpt. Judice said.
If you know anything about this incident, call Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS (8477).
