SLIDELL, LA (NBC33) — A historic church that has been vacant since Hurricane Katrina was destroyed by an arsonist last night. A barn and vehicle located within the same block were also set ablaze, and investigators believe all of the cases are connected.
The fire at The Slidell Light of the World Church was reported to the St. Tammany Fire Department on Wednesday, Aug. 14 by a passerby. Firefighters arrived on scene at roughly 10:48 p.m. and were able to contain the blaze over roughly 30 minutes.
The 1000 square foot church was erected it 1886, but was abandoned after it was damaged during Hurricane Katrina. However, a recent restoration effort worked to restore the historic building.
While firefighters battled the blaze at the church, they were additionally notified about another fire roughly one block away. That fire was started in a barn.
At the same time, the also located a Ford Bronco that was set on fire a few blocks away from the barn.
Investigators believe all of the cases are the result of arson and are working to develop a suspect in the case.
