GONZALES, LA (NBC33) — A woman and her baby are in stable condition after an emergency surgery and delivery following an early morning shooting.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the shooting happened at roughly 4:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14. We’re told the 8-month pregnant victim was leaving her home when her ex-boyfriend, Cowan Collins, 27, approached her and fired several shots.
The victim got in her vehicle and drove off in an attempt to escape the gunman. She ended up wrecking her vehicle at the intersection of Hwy. 621 and Orleans Drive in Gonzales.
Deputies responded to the scene and discovered that the woman was suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm and chest. She was immediately transported to a local hospital where she underwent emergency surgery. Both her and the baby are expected to survive.
Collins was arrested and charged with Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Attempted First-Degree Feticide, and Illegal Use of a Weapon. He was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail. His bond was set at $550,000.
Officials say the investigation is ongoing.
