POINTE COUPEE PARISH (NBC33) — Pointe Coupee Sheriff's deputies arrested one of their own, Joseph 'Reed' Bueche, 51. Sheriff Bud Torres says there were several allegations that Bueche was involved in drug activity. Wednesday night deputies were forced to arrest Bueche after an investigation by state police.
"It was disheartening, disappointing, to have somebody who has been with the department 10 years, be capable of doing this," said Sheriff Torres.
Disappointed is the best way Sheriff Torres can describe how he feels after having to arrest and fire one of his own deputies for malfeasance in office.
"We received information at the sheriff's office of criminal wrong-doing by one of our deputies. You know, when we entrust you as a deputy, and you're given that badge, you're held to a higher standard," said Torres.
According to police documents Bueche admitted to investigators that he'd bought drugs more than once. Torres isn't the only one disappointed; people who know former deputy Joseph Reed Bueche are just as baffled.
"It's shocking! I haven't really heard anything about it," said Giselle Franklin, who works in Pointe Coupee.
"If you look at employees across any business or company, not all are perfect. You would hope that in the judicial and in the law enforcement that they would be," said Bill Ruiz, who lives in Pointe Coupee.
Torres said the recent arrest is forcing him to take a closer look at all of his deputies.
"What we're going to be doing is just monitoring this situation and making sure that our deputies are out there patrolling and doing what they're supposed to do," said Torres.
Bueche has only been arrested on two counts of malfeasance in office.
