NATCHITOCHES PARISH, LA (NBC33) — A 12-year-old boy died yesterday after he was thrown from the ATV he was driving.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the crash happened in Natchitoches Parish on Monday, August 5 at roughly 3:35 p.m. We’re told the pre-teen, Hunter R. Cason, was driving the ATV on Holmon Loop Road near U.S. Hwy. 71 when he lost control.
Investigators believe Cason went off the road and began overturning. The ATV then hit two trees and he was ejected from the vehicle.
Cason was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene.
There have been several fatal crashes throughout Louisiana over the past month. The ATV industry has recommendations for the age of the rider and the size of ATV. It is recommended that youth 6 and older ride an ATV with an engine size less than 70 cubic centimeters. Youth 12 and older should only ride an ATV with an engine size of 90 cubic centimeters or less. Only youth aged 16 years or older should be allowed to ride an ATV with an engine size greater than 90 cubic centimeters.
