BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A Baton Rouge man died after he was stabbed in his chest and neck by his girlfriend. The woman has not been issued any charges at this time.
“It’s still under investigation,” Cpl. Don Coppola, Baton Rouge Police Department, said. “As soon as detectives conclude the investigation then it will either be ruled as self-defense or charges will be filed.”
The incident happened on Sunday, August 4 at roughly 9:30 p.m. Officers responded to the Summer Grove Apartments and found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Detectives learned that the victim, Aaron Cummings, 32, instigated the attack. He allegedly hit his girlfriend Jauvanda Carter, 34, with his fists and strangled her, causing her to pass out.
Carter’s 8-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son tried to break up the fight. Cummings allegedly knocked the girl to the ground, then fought with the teen boy. It was at this point that Carter grabbed a knife from the kitchen.
Cummings was transported to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.
If this case is classified as self-defense, it will be the second one committed by a civilian within Baton Rouge City Limits during 2013. The first happened on Saturday, February 4 at a home located on the 3800 block of Topeka Street. The homeowner shot and killed Anthony Taylor, 20, after he fired a gun at him during an attempted robbery.
This is the 39th homicide investigation for the Baton Rouge Police Department during 2013. For a complete list of all the homicides that have occurred in East Baton Rouge Parish, click here.
