NORTH CAROLINA (CNN) — North Carolina authorities shot and killed an alligator they say ate an 80 pound dog.
Authorities found the massive alligator Wednesday, July 24 with remnants of the dog still in its mouth.
Police say a woman was walking her dog without a leash near the water Tuesday when the massive reptile attacked. Authorities believe the alligator may have mistaken the dog for a large duck.
The alligator is about 12-feet long and weighs more than 500 pounds. Authorities decided to shoot it after determining it was too big to relocate.
Wildlife officials plan to bury the carcass or use it for research.
