BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — All westbound lanes are now open on I-12, but traffic is moving at a crawl following a crash involving an 18-wheeler.
The incident happened between the Sherwood and Airline exit. It left several lanes blocked on I-12 and continues to slow traffic to a crawl.
The Baton Rouge Police Department reports that an 18-wheeler carrying a crane was traveling in the westbound lane at roughly 2:15 p.m. when it crossed the median and struck a light pole. The pole fell across the eastbound lane and is currently blocking traffic.
“We’re waiting to cut the power to the light poles so that we can remove them,” Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, BRPD, said. “Once they are moved all lanes will be opened.”
Officials have opened one lane for eastbound traffic. They could not say how long it would be before all lanes are opened.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured in the crash.
