BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Twenty-six senators returned ballots late Thursday evening to cancel out an automatic veto session.
The session was automatically set to start on July 16, unless either 2/3rds of the House or Senate voted against it.
Only 20 votes from Senators were needed to cancel the session, 26 votes were returned.
"At this time, I am of the belief that not holding a veto session is in our state's best interest, considering the costs involved and the uncertainty of garnering the necessary two-thirds vote to override any veto," said Senate President John Alario said.
Several groups called for the veto session after Governor Bobby Jindal vetoed portions of their funding.
