BAYOU CORNE,LA (NBC33) — Property owners in Bayou Corne are getting ready to meet with Texas Brine and a mediator. The goal is to work out a deal everyone's happy with.
Texas Brine is paying for a independent mediator to listen to both sides starting Thursday. Property owners without lawyers have tried to give the company a chance to buy them out. Texas Brine gave out more than 90 buyout offers. Only 44 people accepted.
Other people who received buyout offers said they weren't given a fair deal.
Now they are hoping the company will come around, but most residents are not banking on it.
"They don't know about the struggles we've faced since the sinkhole formed. They have no clue," Nick Romero, Bayou Corne property owner, explained. "All they are worried about is the all mighty dollar, and how they can avoid giving you anything close to what you deserve."
A federal judge gave Texas Brine until July 31 to work it out with residents who don't have lawyers. If the mediation doesn't work property owners next step is to hire a lawyer.
