BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A new study by the East Baton Rouge Department of Public Works found that the number of dangerous right angle crashes dropped 40 percent since redlight cameras went up; however, they also noticed the number of rear end accidents went up 4 percent.
"I don't think it will actually improve anything if one number goes down one number goes up and they are both crashes. I don't think we are improving anything," Christian Lawson, Baton Rouge driver, explained.
Baton Rouge Driver Cornisha Sharper hates camera lights.
"They try and take your money, because the yellow light goes too fast," Sharper said.
She knows first hand how it feels to get a camera light ticket. Now she notices other drivers trying to avoid the same fate.
"I don't like them. They don't help us," Sharper said. "It's just creating more traffic accidents."
Christian Lawson works next to the camera light off Coursey and Sherwood Forrest. He said the cameras go off all the time.
"It's not that they are running the redlights," Lawson explained. "They are stopping but they are going past the line a little bit and that gets you hurt. "
Lawson feels the report shows the cameras aren't doing their job.
Baton Rouge Driver Brenda Whittenberg says drivers need to look where they are going not blame cameras.
"I believe that's just the drivers fault for not paying attention. Not the camera at all," Whittenberg said.
Whittenberg thinks the cameras do have technical issues, but they do a good job protecting drivers from redlight runners.
"I have seen them go off when I don't know why they went off. I'd give them out of a 100 I would give them a 75," She said.
Attached is the report from the department of public works. The collisions table is a summary of accident data compiled by Traffic Engineering with the Department of Public Works. The first table reflects those intersections where cameras were installed in 2008 with a comparison of crashes in those intersections both before the cameras were installed and after the cameras were installed. The second table reflects the same information for all intersections where cameras were installed in 2009.
