ST. MARTIN PARISH, LA — A Guy’s Towing tow truck operator has died and a Texas man is in jail for vehicular homicide following an early morning hit-and-run crash on I-10 near Breaux Bridge investigated by Troop I.
At 2:23 a.m. on Sunday, June 30, Blaze Louviere, 25, of Breaux Bridge, was standing on the shoulder of I-10 Westbound near his tow truck attempting to remove a disabled vehicle. Troopers indicated Louviere’s tow truck was equipped with the proper yellow strobe overhead light bar.
A 2000 GMC Yukon, driven by Luis Molina of Mission, TX, 24, was approaching Louviere. For reasons still under investigation, Molina struck Louviere and fled the scene. Witnesses followed Molina into the Breaux Bridge city limits; where, Breaux Bridge Police Officers took him into custody without incident until Troopers could arrive.
Louviere was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. At 9:20 a.m., Troopers were notified by the St. Martin Parish Coroner that Louviere had succumbed to his injuries.
Molina was not injured in the crash. It is unknown if he was wearing his seat belt. Molina was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He was placed under arrest and booked into the St. Martin Parish Jail for vehicular homicide, improper lane use and felony hit-and-run. Toxicology samples were obtained and will be submitted to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
This crash remains under investigation.
Louisiana Law requires drivers operating a vehicle upon an interstate or multi-lane highway to yield the right of way to a parked vehicle on the shoulder of the road. If a lane change is not possible, the law requires drivers to reduce their speed. On two lane roads, drivers are required to maintain a safe speed for roadway conditions.
Last year, 62% of the fatal crashes investigated by Troop I involved some form of impairment. Troopers remind drivers about the dangers of impaired driving. Even after having just one drink, decision making abilities are hindered. Make the responsible decision every time, don’t drink and drive.
