BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — Some call it a fashion statement. Others will tell you it’s a healthier way of living. No matter what you call it, dermatologists across the globe and here in Baton Rouge agree that a man’s beard is great in the fight against skin cancer.
The new study produced in Australia shows that people with beards are less likely to get skin cancer. Researchers used manikins to complete the study. They say those manikins with beards showed significantly less exposure to unhealthy ultraviolet rays.
Dermatologists here in Baton Rouge agree with the research.
“This definitely goes with years of research that if you have some type of covering whether its sunscreen - whether it's a hat on your bald head, or hair, they can block the sun from hitting your skin and causing DNA damage and lowering the immune cells on your skin,” Dr. Jordan Whatley, Baton Rouge Dermatology Clinic, said.
The survey went on to say the beards caught pollen, dust, and also helped people with allergies.
