LAFAYETTE, LA (NBC33) — The Lafayette Parish Correctional Center gained a new high tech video system that helps increase security, while also providing more options for family members of prisoners.
“The new system records all voicemails, video visits, and electronic messages received and sent by inmates,” a press release issued by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, said. “The system allows for security through real time monitoring of conversations and messaging.”
The video visitation system was installed on Monday, June 24 and allows for an increase in the hours for visitation. Previously, that was limited to onsite times, which are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. However, the new remote system extends those hours to 10:00 p.m. any day of the week.
The visitation also allows for inmates to communicate with family members who are unable to be at the location.
“This will allow for more personal connections on family event days such as birthdays, anniversaries, public holidays, and religious holidays,” the release said.
Inmates will also be able to use the system to message and make request of jail staff. The electronic requests system will save staff time and the expense of shuffling and recording paper requests. Both the inmates and staff will benefit for the greater accountability of the requests the system will provide.
Inmates and family will still be able to visit weekly at no charge. Inmates will be allowed two free in person 30 minute video visits per week. Additional visitation time can be purchased at a minimal charge of 25 cents per additional minutes per week for onsite usage and 50 cents per minute for remote access.
