Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — The heat can be deadly for some people - that includes young children and teens outside practicing for fall sports.
Technicians with Baton Rouge EMS are doing EKG tests on athletes all summer to help prevent tragedies on the practice or playing fields.
The EKG's help find existing heart problems and pinpoint risk for athletes who push themselves to extremes.
If they find something, the athletes are referred to a cardiologist before they can be cleared to get back on the field.
EMS has already been to a several Baton Rouge high schools and will make their rounds as the summer progresses.
