KENNER, LA (NBC33) — Two women were arrested after they allegedly told a 10-year-old to drive the car because they were too intoxicated.
The Kenner Police Department made the arrest shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12. The traffic stop was initiated after several people called about a car being driven recklessly on I-10.
The officer located the vehicle and witnessed the driver strike a curb while making a turn. At that point he initiated a traffic stop. When the driver’s door opened, out stepped a 10-year-old.
The passengers, Brenda Byrd, 54, and Shelia Joiner, 48, admitted that they were intoxicated and they instructed the juvenile to drive them. A 15-year-old juvenile was also a passenger in the vehicle.
Both Byrd and Joiner were arrested and charged with Contributing to the Delinquency of a Juvenile and Allowing an Unlicensed Driver to Operate a Motor Vehicle.
Both of the juveniles were placed into protective custody and were released to family members.
