ST. TAMMANY, LA — Rep. Tim Burns, R-Mandeville is pleased to report that Governor Bobby Jindal has signed HB 561, which transfers the financial management of the St. Tammany coroner’s office to the Parish Council. The bill had been passed unanimously by the legislature.
“The transfer of financial authority from the St. Tammany parish coroner’s office to the parish Council is the first step in restoring public trust to the office and I’m very happy that Gov. Jindal has signed HB 561, which is effective upon signature. I’m certain that St. Tammany Parish president Pat Brister and the rest of the parish Council will manage the office in a prudent fashion," said Rep. Tim Burns.
The law requires the coroner’s office to transfer any and all funds on hand received from the ad valorem tax to the parish governing authority, except for amounts needed for the operation for the remainder of calendar year 2013, with that amount being determined by the St. Tammany Parish finance office. In addition, any contracts or purchase agreements entered into by the St. Tammany Parish coroner’s office shall require approval or ratification by the governing authority.
The law also states that the annual salary of the coroner shall be established by the governing authority of the parish of St. Tammany, which will also establish annual salaries for deputy and other assistants. The shall also be prohibited from owning or acquiring any movable property.
