BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The whole western side of our nation is in a state of exceptional drought. Here at home, we're feeling the effects in the cost and availability of beef due to the skyrocketing cost of grain.
After five decades in the meat retail industry, Kelly’s Meat Market has seen the ups and downs that come along with it.
“There are a lot of challenges in today's economy," said Owner, Cecilia Santangelo.
The owners, the Santangelo family, say the prices for red meat are up nearly 20 percent across the board.
"Some of the meat companies we order from, they are telling us every day that even their trucks are going out are light and it's slow for them, too," noted Santangelo.
Parts of Texas, Kansas and Colorado, where we get most of our beef, have seen less than 10 percent of their normal rainfall which is making it harder to feed the cows, in turn causing a spike in prices.
“We have a lot of monthly shoppers and I have seen where they have cut back because prices have increased on some things," said Santangelo.
Like Tara Dearbone; as prices change, she changes her grocery list.
“Yeah we don't purchase steaks as much,” said Dearbone. “We used to have the prime rib and all of that and also our roast but we don't purchase it as much."
“If prices go up people don't buy as much they will look for less expensive types of meats to cook,” noted Santagelo.
Because of the price increase for red meat across the nation meat markets such as Kelly’s have added items to their menu such as deer, alligator and rabbit to make sure they still stay in business.
So now, Kelly’s is doing what it can to serve the community that has supported the company for the past 50 years.
"You have to pay attention to what you have to do to keep your business intact."
NBC33's Chief Meteorologist Jesse Gunkel says there's no sign of relief in sight for those out west. But here in Louisiana, we have seen an exceptional amount of rainfall so far this year.
