SLIDELL, LA (NBC33) — Two Slidell Police Officers were sent to the hospital early this morning after they flipped a police cruiser during a high speed chase.
Officials say the two officers were patrolling in a single vehicle on the west-side of Slidell when they noticed a suspicious vehicle. It was roughly 3:30 a.m. and the vehicle had a burnt out headlight and no license plate.
The officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle. Although the suspect initially started to stop, he suddenly sped up and attempted to flee.
During the pursuit, the police vehicle left the roadway, hit a cement culvert and flipped over.
“The officers, both of whom were wearing seatbelts, miraculously sustained only minor injuries and were released from the hospital late this morning,” a press release stated.
The suspect, Benjamin Bernard, 28, initially got away when the crash occurred. However, another officer patrolling the area spotted the vehicle and managed to pull the vehicle over.
Bernard was arrested and charged with Aggravated Flight from an Officer, Hit-and-Run, and Failure to Have Two Headlights.
