Baton Rouge, La — A department that could bring the state $500 million is stalling before it can be created.
The proposed Department of Debt could help collect millions that are owed to the state.
The bill hit a speed bump in the Senate Finance Committee when senators questioned where exactly the money collected would go. The brains behind the proposed department, Representative Chris Broadwater, said his latest amendment should fix that.
"We want to make sure that it's available for the legislature to use, so that we can budget it based on what those priorities are,” stated Broadwater. “If we see there's a crisis in higher education, for instance, we can apply that money there."
Broadwater says he wants the money to go to the general fund and help hard-hit programs, such as the Department of Health and Hospitals.
