louisiana — During the 2013 Memorial Day weekend, the Louisiana State Police investigated 6 fatal crashes resulting in 8 deaths. This is up from last year’s 4 fatal crashes resulting in 4 deaths last Memorial Day weekend.
Troop A (Baton Rouge): A two vehicle crash on LA 42 resulting in one death and one serious injury. This crashed occurred when a vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign and pulled into the path of an oncoming vehicle. Alcohol was not suspected and only one of the drivers was wearing a seat belt.
Troop B (New Orleans): A two vehicle crash on US 61 resulting in three deaths and two in critical condition. The crash occurred when a vehicle crossed the median into oncoming traffic and was struck. Speed and impairment are suspected to be factors in the crash. One of the deaths, a passenger, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected out of the vehicle.
Troop C (Houma): A single vehicle crash on Deadwood Road resulting in one death. This crash involved a vehicle that lost control and struck a tree. The passenger in the vehicle, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown into the windshield and pronounced dead on the scene. Impairment is suspected to be a factor in the crash.
Troop D (Lake Charles): NONE
Troop E (Alexandria): A UTV crash on Parhams Road resulting in one death. The crash involved a UTV that overturned and ejected the driver who was pronounced dead on the scene.
Troop F (Monroe): NONE
Troop G (Shreveport): NONE
Troop I (Lafayette): A single vehicle crash on I-49 resulting in one death. This crash involved a vehicle that traveled off the roadway and struck a tree. The driver, who was unrestrained, was pronounced dead on the scene.
Troop L (Mandeville): A four vehicle crash on LA 445 resulting in one death. The crash involved a hit and run vehicle and a moped operator, who was not wearing a helmet, that was ejected and pronounced dead on the scene. Troopers suspect impairment on the part of the moped operator and the crash is still under investigation.
Motorists that witness hazardous situations are urged to call *LSP (*577) and report that activity to the Louisiana State Police.
