Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — In session today, the proposed breakaway school district in East Baton Rouge Parish is moving forward at the Capitol.
The Southeastern Community School District would take thousands of students out of EBR Parish schools.
The bill passed through a House committee today and heads next to the House floor.
Those against the breakaway district say that even though legislators keep pushing it through the process, they're still not convinced it will hold up during debate.
"This is one of those issues where if they didn't see the bill in committee, they're probably not going to be well aware of all the nuances around the bill,” stated Belinda Davis with One Community, One School District. “So our job, as a group, is to bring that information to them."
This is a proposed constitutional amendment , so even after it passes through the legislative process, it would still need to be voted on by the public.
