The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is about to start a major fundraising effort. The charity wants to open a new facility, and they may finally have the money to do it.
Last year, the organization gave out 10.8 million pounds of food, but employees say they could have provided even more if they had room to store it. The organization just received grants and donations totalling more than 2 million dollars. They have the space to open a new warehouse, but they need to raise even more money.
It would ultimately give the Food Bank five times the amount of space they have now. Employees say, a bigger building would keep them from turning away food donations, something they've had to do in the past.
If all goes according to plan, the organization could move into the new facility at the end of next year.
The Great Baton Rouge Food Bank feeds 171,000 people in 11 parishes over the course of a year. They expect to serve more people with the new facility.
The Food Bank generally sends food to facilities throughout the Capital Area. Check out the attachment for a list of facilities that the Food Bank services.
