BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: Metro Council approved the Costco proposal 10-1. That paves the way for the mega store to move into Baton Rouge.
ORIGINAL: The retail giant Costco could be coming to Baton Rouge.
"I don't think a lot of people know what Costco is, but I think it will probably be better and more diverse that going to the Wal-Mart," Richard Cannon, a Baton Rouge resident, said.
Mayor-President Kip Holden has setup a deal with the company to build a new 150-thousand square foot facility on Dawn Dale (off Airline Highway) at the old Coca-Cola bottling plant. However, the East Baton Rouge Metro Council still has to approve the creation of an Economic Development District for the area.
The district would help cover the cost of improving streets and other repairs before the store would move in. People living in the area say they like the idea.
"I think it's pretty awesome,” Jermaine Smith, a Baton Rouge resident, said. “I think it will bring more money to the community - help bring more to the people so they don't have to go to the other Sam's, they can just go right there."
The Metro Council will begin discussing the improvements and Economic District on Wednesday.
