Baton Rouge, LA (NBC33) — At an emergency board meeting Thursday, CATS accepted the resignation of former CEO Brian Marshall and opened the search process for his replacement.
Marshall resigned earlier this week after three-plus years with the organization.
Board chairman Isaiah Marshall, no relation to Brian Marshall, said he wants to have an interim CEO chosen no later than May 20, because the board's next regularly-scheduled meeting is the following day.
"I think it's critical that we do it as expeditiously as possible," agreed fellow board member Ken Perret.
The interim CEO would likely serve a 6-9 month term, according to Isaiah Marshall, until a permanent replacement can be found.
Board member Dalton Honore said CATS needs a candidate, "who is accustomed to change. Because that's the only constant that will be going on for the next 6-9 months, and that will be the change of the system."
Riders who spoke to NBC33 had a different expectation of the new CEO.
"Somebody who's going to help us," said Maxine Porter of her ideal candidate.
"Really, just focus on what the people want, not just what he wants," agreed Michael Genola.
Genola added that he wants someone who will continue CATS' plan to change and expand its services.
"They are improving things, too," he stated. "They said they're gonna improve some things, and they are."
Porter had a less favorable opinion of CATS. She uses an electric wheelchair, and said its battery often dies because CATS does not have outlets she can use to recharge it. She also said the condition of the buses needs to improve.
"And especially the lifts," she exclaimed. "Oh my goodness, I done got stuck in the air on lifts, and had to wait I-don't-know-how-long for them to come get me. And all this here, there's so much."
Honore will share administrative duties with Gary Owens, CATS' chief financial officer, until the interim CEO is named. Honore said he will not take a paycheck from CATS for his work, though interim CEO will be a paid position.
CATS is taking resumes now for both the interim and permanent CEO positions.
