20-year-old Ciara Monique Craig told police she didn’t want a baby. And she didn’t want to upset her family.
"There's no way to explain this, there's no way to justify this,” said Chief Steve Caraway.
Police say the young mother told them she had no other choice but to get rid of the newborn. Witnesses say she actually gave birth to the little girl at an apartment complex in river ridge.
Some time after, Craig allegedly drove to the lake shore, got out of her car and threw the contents of a garbage bag into the lake. Elliott Lew was at lake Pontchartrain at the time. He says what he discovered in the water was very disturbing.
"I happened to be walking by and I saw that there was a gentleman carrying a pole and I approached him. He asked me if I thought it might be a body in the water, and I looked at it from a distance and I saw two legs moving,” said Lew.
Police say the baby girl was still alive when she was thrown into the water. The newborn's body was recovered at the Kenner boat launch just after 2 pm on Tuesday.
"This was a full term female, baby, absolutely gorgeous. The umbilical cord was still somewhat attached, and, one of our police officers actually pulled her out of the water,” said Caraway.
Craig turned herself into police Tuesday night at the urging of her family. Police say she'll be charged with first degree murder based on her statement that the baby's heart was still beating when she tossed the infant into the lake.
