Baton Rouge, La (NBC33) — Dozens of people filled the steps of the State Capitol today, pushing for an increase in the cigarette tax.
The groups want to see the tax per pack go up $1.05 in hopes that the money will go right back to healthcare in the state.
Some young supporters of the tax say even though they can't vote yet, but they're still asking their lawmakers to support the tax hike and make it harder for kids to start smoking.
"Seeing kids my age smoking and seeing them hurt themselves, I take that very seriously,” stated seventh grader Brianna Aquilano. “I think if I take part in this group I am in, I can prevent that from happening."
The American Cancer Society is also pushing for higher cigarette prices in the hopes it will encourage people to not start smoke.
