ASCENSION PARISH, La (NBC33) — The Ascension Parish Assessor is trying to help homeowners reduce their taxes.
Assessor Mert Smiley has started holding community chats around the parish; it's a way to get more information to residents about the exemptions they qualify for.
Seniors and veterans have special exemptions, but the Assessor's Office says many people don't know about them, and there's no time like tax time to find out.
"It's never too late to apply for your homestead exemption, and never too late to sign up for your special level assessment,” stated Ascension Parish Chief Deputy Assessor Justin Chanplin. “We believe that's very important for you, the homeowner, to take advantage of these things because if you don't, you're going to be losing out on what savings you could have."
The next "Assessor's Chat" will be tonight at 6:00 p.m. at Donaldsonville City Hall. There will be another one on April 30 at Dutchtown High School.
