NATIONAL NEWS (NBC33) — Many are generously donating money to help the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings. However, officials warn that potential scammers are already trying to take advantage of the tragedy.
“If you receive a phone call for Donations for the Boston Explosion, it’s a scam,” Blue Alert, a Twitter account for fallen Law Enforcement Officers, warned in a post. “Donate to the Red Cross.”
It’s a problem that is familiar and disturbing. Scammers will exploit a devastating event covered on national news for their own profit. It’s happened after 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and most recently after the Newtown shooting incident.
The best way to avoid being scammed is to donate only through verified charity organizations, such as the Red Cross. We have a link to the donation account added to the NBC33 Facebook page. Click here to go there directly, or donate by phone at (800) HELP-NOW.
