LAFAYETTE, LA (NBC33) — Governor Bobby Jindal has declared this week as Work Zone Safety week in Louisiana, so the Department of Transportation and Development held a press conference today to make the public aware of the dangers construction zones may have.
A construction site in Scott proved to be the perfect place for a press conference to urge people to slow down at construction sites. Representatives from the state police, DOTD, Scott Police, and the mayors of Scott and Lafayette spoke about the importance of driving safely through work zones.
"The people that work these construction zones, these are mothers. Somebody's mother, father, daughter, son, children. We want people to go back home to their loved ones. So when you're going through a work zone, you know, think about if it were my child working that construction zone. What would you do?" says Sherri LeBas, Secretary of Louisiana DOTD.
DOTD has assembled a cone memorial on the front of it's headquarters building in remembrance of the 590 fatalities nationwide in work zones in 2011, including 13 in Louisiana.
